Description
Früg is an Austrian wine project from the south-eastern region of Burgenland. The wines come from the family-run Wurzinger winery, whose vineyards — about 25 hectares across 13 sites — have been managed under certified organic viticulture since 2014.
The core idea behind Früg is to produce honest, natural-style wines that are both easy-drinking and respectful of the land. Winemaking emphasizes minimal intervention: grapes are farmed organically (no synthetic pesticides or herbicides), fermentation is spontaneous (using native yeasts), and wines are bottled without fining or filtration, usually with only minimal added sulfur.
Perhaps the brand’s best-known wine is the “Orange” — a skin-contact white/orange wine typically made from a blend of 70% Grüner Veltliner and 30% Roter Traminer. The grapes grow in soils of gravel, chalk, and sandy-clay, which contribute a mineral streak to the wine.
Tasting-wise, Früg’s organic wines tend to show a refreshing, fruit-forward character — think peaches, apricots, apples, meadow-flowers, with a subtle herbal or floral nuance (especially from the Traminer), and a lively acidity balanced by mineral undertones. The wines are light to medium in body and noticeably “gluggable.”
Overall, Früg offers an appealing entry into natural/organic wines: the combination of organic farming, low-intervention production, transparent sourcing, and easy-to-enjoy flavor makes it a great everyday wine — especially if you’re interested in sustainability, natural wine philosophy, and the character of Austrian grapes and terroir.
